Texas College Republicans Chairman and Southern Methodist University junior Charlie McCaslin has resigned after footage of an incendiary toast he gave endorsing national College Republican National Chairman hopeful Alex Schriver surfaced on the internet, reports the Daily Campus.
The video shows an allegedly inebriated McCaslin pledging his full support to Schriver at a Texas College Republicans convention afterparty, calling Schriver’s opponents “nerds” and “fags.” Going slightly off-topic, McCaslin also waxed poetic about “being hammered” at a girl’s apartment and a subsequent romantic tryst. Schriver responded to the speech with an emphatic “To Charlie!”
McCaslin announced Thursday that he will resign from his post because of the incident, reports the Daily Campus. “I cannot continue my work for the party in this capacity,” he wrote in a letter to the Texas College Republicans. “The mistakes I have made have put my colleagues, my friends and school in harm’s way and they do not deserve to be part of such a bitter cycle.”
Schriver told the Other McCain that he found McCaslin’s words “inappropriate and highly offensive” and offered his sincere apology for his involvement. He remains in the running for the national position.
In response to the video, current Ohio College Republican Federation Chairman and Schriver’s opponent Jonathon Snyder released a statement calling the video reprehensible. “Based on what this video shows, I believe [Schriver] lacks the necessary leadership and character to head the College Republican National Committee,” he said.
The next College Republican National Committee Chairman will be elected this summer, at the College Republican convention in Washington D.C.
