What is a web design degree?

Web design training has to do with every aspect in creating a website page. For example, this includes the layout, user interface, site structure, navigation, the colors, font, imagery, and the way the information is spread out on the website.  Web designers are responsible for everything that goes onto a web page from the look and feel to incorporating the features that make the website accessible and able to run smoothly and attract new visitors.

What degrees are needed for a career in web design?

Most employers will require a Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual arts, or other areas of the fine arts.   It is becoming more common for employers to seek new employees who have specialized in user interface design and information design.

More web design master degrees are opening up in web design for more specialized concentrations.  These degrees are typically in computer science concentrations such as site architecture.

What skills need to be developed to become a web designer?

Students should have effective communication skills because a large amount of their time will consist of working for others.  They should also have a vivid imagination and creativity skills.  Most importantly they should have a mastery of the tools they will need to use on a daily basis such as HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript.  It is not only necessary to understand the tools, but to be able to understand how a web page must flow in order to look flawless.

What courses should students expect to take?

Web design degrees should offer an education that is first and foremost in layout and design.  Many people expect to learn more of the programming side of things.  They will learn these too, but these are skills that will constantly be developing throughout their lives.  Web designers that do not understand how layout and design work will not be very successful.

Examples of some classes that web designers should expect to take include:  Dreamweaver Training, Flash Training, Web Design Contract Class, Interactive Design, and Motion Graphics.  Students should be building a portfolio throughout their classes to be able to show to prospective employers and clients.

Are web design degrees online available?

People are more than capable of earning an Associate’s degree, Certificate, Bachelor’s degree and even a Web design Master’s degree online.  There are thousands of sites that have web design programs.  This leads to the problem of finding the actual ones that are accredited.  It is important to find a list of accredited schools that offer online programs.  Many online programs are actually just for training, which is actually important as there are new skills that web design students will have to learn every year.
